PAISLEY

“A round of margaritas for the gorgeous ladies.”

Sounding as relaxed as one can be despite the crazy commotion around us, Ryder is all boyish smiles as he places drinks in front of me, Eden and Olga with expert movement.

“Thank you, honey,” Olga says. “Are they gonna let you take a breather? It’s crazy busy tonight. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this place bustling like this.”

“Exactly why there’s no time for a breather. People keep booking tables upstairs,” he says, alluding to the brand-new poker rooms. “Every Saturday until the end of summer is already booked out. Fridays aren’t far behind. Wizard’s gonna have to open the rooms on weekdays if the excitement doesn’t die down.”

“And hire more bartenders,” Eden adds.

“I wouldn’t need to hire more bartenders if the ones I have would stop flirting with the customers and get their asses into gear,” Wizard says, coming out of nowhere and dropping a hand on Ryder’s shoulder.

“Not flirting, boss. Just serving the most important customers,” he justifies himself, mischief dancing in his brown eyes while a strand of unruly chestnut hair falls in front of them.

“Yeah, yeah,” Wizard retorts, battling a grin. “Get back to work, prospect.”

“Right away, Boss.” He follows the instruction but shoots us a playful wink before walking away.

Wizard leans over, one arm stretched out to reach for the bowl of peanuts. He takes a few and pops them into his mouth before speaking.

“How’s it going around here? Having a good time?”

“We’re lucky enough to have a table, and we have a good drink. What more could anyone want?” Olga answers, holding out her glass.

“Fuck, you’re right,” Wizard admits. “The bar’s never been so crowded. Looks like the poker rooms are gonna be even better for business than I thought. It won’t keep being this busy, but if half of tonight’s crowd become regulars on the weekends, Ryder’s right. I might need another bartender,” he admits while letting his gaze roam around the place.

He runs a really nice place. Booths and high tables are scattered around the room, and there’s an area with a couple of pool tables. Shades of gray and white dominate the sleek, modern furniture, and the wooden bar lined with a shelf featuring bottles of liquor gives a rustic touch to the place in contrast. It says both stylish and casual.

“But in the meantime,” he goes on immediately. “it looks like I’m stuck giving them a hand behind the bar. I’ll see you later, sweethearts.”

After those parting words and a faint sigh, he’s gone as fast as he showed up.

When a string of at least a dozen of people steps through the front door, Eden says, “I might have to skip the occasional Saturday drink if it keeps up like this.”

“You don’t like crowds?” I ask her.

She hasn’t seemed nervous to me, but that doesn’t mean anything.

“Not really,” she admits. “I’m more of a ‘small group’ kind of person. I used to have panic attacks a long time ago when I was surrounded by too many people.
